Week 22

2 Samuel 13:1-21:22

2 Sam 13:4b “So Amnon told him, ‘I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.'” I was like that’s so me (bear with me here)…to try to justify what I know is sin by downplaying the situation or the circumstances. I mean, rather than saying oh hey I’m in love with my sister he said “my brother Absalom’s sister”…like that would lessen the severity of the sin. I’m guilty of that!! Then he plots with his cousin to get her! Again I see the importance of who we turn to for counseling/advice. In church, Pastor Jeff mentioned the importance of distinguishing the good counsel from the bad…the truth from the reproductions.

Vs 14-15: “But Amnon wouldn’t listen to her, and since he was stronger than she was, he raped her. Then suddenly Amnon’s love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. ‘Get out of here!’ he snarled at her.” Again, so like sin. How often do we become obsessed with something we know we shouldn’t have…but we have to have it?! It consumes us until at last we give in just to be totally disgusted and unfulfilled after?

Vs 18-19: “So the servant put her out and locked the door behind her. She was wearing a long, beautiful robe, as was the custom in those days for the king’s virgin daughters. But now Tamar tore her robe and put ashes on her head. And then, with her face in her hands, she went away crying.” Oh how our sin can bring shame on those it touches. One decision can leave my family ashamed and destroyed. Lord, help me to remember Your truth in the face of reproductions.

Vs 23-29: Absalom plotted to kill Amnon for what he did to their sister…2 years later!! Revenge is a dish best served cold??!!

2 Sam 14:14 “All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.” Thank You, God! Thank you for devising ways to bring me back when I was separated from You by my own sinful desires and selfish choices.

2 Sam 15:26 “But if he is through with me, then let him do what seems best to him.” David recognized the authority of God. Help me, Lord to be as submitted to Your will…to truly say “do what seems best” to You.

2 Sam 16:1b “the servant of Mephibosheth was waiting there for him. He had two donkeys loaded with 200 loaves of bread, 100 clusters of raisins, 100 bunches of summer fruit, and a wineskin full of wine.” David’s kindness to Mephibosheth (result of his love for Jonathan) is being returned to him. We never know when we will be the one in need. If we help others as we can, God will be faithful to supply in our time of need.

2 Sam 17:14 “Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, ‘Hushai’s advice is better than Ahithophel’s.’ For the Lord had determined to defeat the counsel of Ahithophel, which was really the better plan, so that he could bring disaster on Absalom!” God’s ways will prevail! His plan for our lives will be revealed…He is still in control, even in moments where we feel defeated.

2 Sam 19:19-20 “My lord the king, please forgive me,” he pleaded. “Forget the terrible thing your servant did when you left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind. I know how much I have sinned. That is why I have come here today, the very first person in all of Israel to greet my lord the king.” If I take out a few words this is totally my prayer to God this morning!! My Lord the King, please forgive me…Forget the terrible thing Your servant did…May the King put it out of His mind. I know how much I have sinned. That is why I have come here today…to greet my Lord the King. So thankful our King is a forgiving one…over and over!

Vs 29-30: “You’ve said enough,” David replied. “I’ve decided that you and Ziba will divide your land equally between you.” “Give him all of it,’ Mephibosheth said. “I am content just to have you safely back again, my lord the king!” CONTENT!! Help me, Father to not care about all the “stuff”…to not be focused on what You can give me or do for me but to just truly be content in being with You.

2 Sam 20:16-22  Vs16: “But a wise woman in the town called out to Joab, ‘Listen to me, Joab..’…” Vs 22: “Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice, and they cut off Sheba’s head and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the ram’s horn and called his troops back from the attack. They all returned to their homes, and Joab returned to the king at Jerusalem.” Again, a woman made a HUGE impact! Being used…her wisdom saved their city.

John 17:1-Acts 1:26

Jn 17:3 “And this is the way to have eternal life-to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.” The way to have eternal life…the ONLY WAY!!

Vs 15-17: “I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” I am still in the world BUT God will keep me safe from the enemy if I allow Him to make me holy…to teach me His word, His truth…to make that the most important thing in my life.

Jn 18:6 “As Jesus said, ‘I AM he,’ they all drew back and fell to the ground.” Jesus chose the cross. No one forced Him there…He chose it for me…for us. He could’ve destroyed every single person there with one word.

Jn 21:3 “Simon Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing.’ ‘We’ll come, too,’ they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.” Such the way with us. We are confused in a situation or feel lost/alone and we just run back to our past…what we’ve known, who we’ve known, what we’ve done…STOP!! I need to keep my focus on Jesus no matter what and stop running to my past when I’m scared or uncertain. No more “I’m going fishing!”

Vs 22: “Jesus replied, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.'”  To me this is the ultimate slap on the hand about not focusing on others but rather focusing on myself and my walk with Jesus. Don’t worry about what so and so is or isn’t doing with God…look to Jesus and follow Him…no matter what!

Acts 1:14a “They all met together and were constantly united in prayer.”

Psalms 119:81-121:8

Ps 119:91 “Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves your plans.” To this day as well! God’s “regulations”…His truths…do not change no matter what culture, society or popularity say is the “new norm”. His truth is His truth…forever.

Vs 115: “Get out of my life, you evil-minded people, for I intend to obey the commands of my God.” Oh I know some people who I’ve had to apply this to since I rededicated. There are some people that are just intent on evil and pulling us down. It’s okay to cut people out of our lives, even necessary at times, for the sake of our walk with Christ.

Ps 120:1 “I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer.” YES!! Thank You, Father!

Ps 121:1-2 “I look up to the mountains-does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!” GOD IS MY HELP!! I need to stop looking everywhere else for help (guidance, advice, fulfillment…) and start looking only to my God!

Vs 4: “Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.” NEVER!! He will never say “I’m busy” or “I’m resting”…He is ALWAYS available!

Vs 5: “The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.” !!!!

Proverbs 16:6-18

Vs 6: “Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.” Fearing the Lord..not afraid/scared of fear but a sense of awe/reverence/amazement for His power and authority.

Vs 8: “Better to have a little, with godliness, than to be rich and dishonest.” Lord, help me to be content with what You have blessed us with…to focus on godliness rather than material gain.”

Vs 18a: “Pride goes before destruction…” DON’T HET PRIDEFUL!! Don’t get so caught up in what I “think” I can do that I fall on my face! Only rest in what I KNOW God can do!!
