Week 15

Deuteronomy 33:1-Joshua 12:24

Deut 33:27 “The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you.” God’s got me!! He is ALWAYS with me-holding me.

Deut 34: The death of Moses. God gifted him by allowing him to see all the land that would be given to his people.

Vs 5-6: “So, Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, just as the Lord had said. The Lord buried him in a valley near Beth-peor in Moab, but to this day no one knows the exact place.” “…the servant of the Lord”-could there be any better epitaph?! To be known in this way…what a legacy to leave!

“So special was Moses to the heart of God that his death was not a public matter but a private communion between two good friends.” -The Woman’s Study Bible

Joshua 1:8 “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Study, meditate, memorize, apply…make the Bible truly my roadmap for life. It’s our instruction manual for life-don’t skip the instructions!! That’s how things get broken or used incorrectly!

Vs 9: “This is my command-be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” LOVE THIS!! He is with me ALWAYS and EVERYWHERE!! I’m loving the phrase “be strong and courageous”…already repeated 3x in the first 9 verses of Joshua!

Josh 2:11 (Rahab speaking) “No wonder our hearts have melted in fear! No one has the courage to fight after hearing such things. For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.” Rahab believed!! She heard the stories of God’s might and chose to believe He was who He said He was! She recognized His power, authority and that HE ALONE WAS GOD!!

Josh 5:1 “When all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings who lived along the Mediterranean coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan River so the people of Israel could cross, they lost heart and were paralyzed with fear because of them.” That’s MY GOD!!! He goes before me-His power and might paralyze those who would stand against Him! PRAISE!!

Vs 9: “Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the shame of your slavery in Egypt.’ So that place has been called Gigal* to this day.”  *Gigal sounds like the Hebrew word galal, meaning “to roll”.  Thank You for my “Gilgal”! For freeing me from my slavery/bondage…for delivering me from my own “Egypt” and taking away the shame of my sinful bondage. Help me, Father, to trust in You, lean on You and truly feel the renewal You’ve gifted me with. Help me to never forget what You have “rolled away” from my life and to not allow the shame of my past to shape me today.

Vs 27: “So the Lord was with Joshua…” Let this be said of me!!

Josh 7:6-10 “Many times defeat comes after victory, that’s when we least expect it. That’s when we feel strongest in ourselves. The people didn’t pray before going against Ai, nor did the Lord command them to go, as He commanded them to take Jericho.” -The Believer’s Bible Commentary

Vs 7:13b: “…Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.” This verse speaks to me in a way that others may not see. I know it’s talking about the Israelites hiding spoils of war that were meant to go to God. For me, I felt the whole “hidden among you”…nothing should be hidden in me…no secret life, sins, thoughts to get in between me and God. “never defeat your enemies”…who are my “enemies”? The devil, worldly influences, temptation, my own fleshly sinful desires…I cannot have victory over these things until I remove the “hidden” and truly  give it to God!

Vs 16-26 Achan steals the plundered items, confesses and his family (him, people, all livestock & all belongings) are stoned to death and buried! Vs 19-20 “Then Joshua said to Achan, ‘My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, by telling the truth, Make your confession and tell me what you have done. Don’t hide it from me.’ Achan replied, ‘It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel.'” He confessed his sin against God and was put to death. I am so thankful that I know the blessing of forgiveness from God! When I confess my sin He is faithful to forgive me. How merciful He is…to not receive the punishment we deserve??

Josh 9:14 “So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord.” DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!! Anytime it says that the Lord wasn’t consulted you know bad things are coming!

Josh 10:10 “The Lord threw them into a panic…” God will fight my battle for me if I turn to Him! Vs 11 “As the Ammorites retreated down the road from Beth-Horan, the Lord destroyed them with a terrible hailstorm from heaven that continued until they reached Azekah. The hail killed more of the enemy than the Israelites killed with the sword.”  Vs14b “Surely the Lord fought for Israel that day!”  “How He did it is no question for us…It is not ours to try and soften down miracles, but to glorify God in them.” C.H. Spurgeon

Josh 11:6 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them…” DO NOT BE AFRAID!!! A main theme I am getting from the book of Joshua.

Vs 15: “As the Lord had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. And Joshua did as he was told, carefully obeying all the commands that the Lord had given to Moses.”

“Complete obedience brings complete victory.”

The Believer’s Bible Commentary

Luke 13:1-17:37

Lk 13:13 “Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!” Amen and amen!! Praise, God…ONE TOUCH!!!

Vs 30: “And note this: Some who seem least important now will be greatest then, and some who are the greatest now will be least important then.” (Jesus speaking) Don’t get caught up in status or worldly success!

Lk 14:4 “When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away.” ONE TOUCH

Vs 11: “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Be humble. Let others “talk us up” if they feel the desire but don’t be preoccupied with position and perception.

Vs 26: (Jesus speaking) “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else-your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.” Jesus isn’t saying we are to hate others here. Rather He is saying our love for Him should be so strong, powerful, committed, overwhelming..that, by comparison, our feelings for others seem like hate. Like the love we have for Him should be so off the charts, nothing we feel for anyone else can even compare!

Lk 15:20 (The Prodigal Son) The Prodigal Me!!! “So he returned to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.”  ‘while he was still a long way off, his father saw him…’ God saw me!! No matter how far I ran He was still looking for me, seeking, wanting me to return! ‘he ran to his son..” God joyfully took me back! I just had to take the first step toward Him and He ran to me! He swept me into His arms and loved me!!

“Daringly Jesus pictured God, not waiting for his shamed child to slink home, nor standing on his dignity when he came, but running out to gather him, shamed and ragged and muddied as he was, to his welcoming arms. The same name “Father” had at once darkened the color of sin and heightened the splendid glory of forgiveness.” -Stewart, Life and Teaching

(Referring to the parables Jesus told) “The point of these stories is that God receives real joy and satisfaction when He sees sinners repenting, whereas He obtains no gratification from self-righteous hypocrites who are too proud to admit their wretched sinfulness.” -The Believer’s Bible Commentary

Lk 16:7 “But go, tell His disciples-and Peter-that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.” A footnote in my Bible said: “To affirm Peter in this unique way was a gracious act of lovingkindness on the part of the Lord. Peter likely felt he was disqualified as a disciple because of his previous denials of Jesus.” I LOVE THIS!! I had never really paid attention before and it gives me such hope! How many times in the past have I denied Jesus with my actions, my words, my thoughts??? Peter denied Him and was forgiven. So have I been! The mercy and compassion of the Lord in this moment, having Peter named to know he’s still His, is overwhelming! It’s a balm for my pain when I just feel like I can’t get past the choices of my past. I reread that verse and just thought, “But go, tell His disciples-and AMBER-that He is going before you….you will see Him, as He said to you.” Hallelujah and Amen!!!

Vs 13: “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” If I let money (material things, the getting of $) become important to me, it will become my master. I can’t truly serve God and serve the things of the world at the same time. There is no such thing as walking on the fence.

Vs 26: “And besides there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no can cross over to us from there.” Oh the heartbreak! It is eternal…there is no second chance after death!

Vs 31: “But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone raises from the dead.'” The stubbornness and hardheartedness of mankind! How sad that we are so lacking faith. We say show me that I may believe but God says, “Believe and I will show you!” Help me to have faith, Lord. To trust even the things I have not yet seen!

Psalms 78:65-84:12

Ps. 79:8b “Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair.” Thank You for Your compassion and mercy, Father. For pulling me back from the “brink of despair”.

Ps 84:2 “I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord.” We should desire/long for heaven. We should never get so caught up in the here and now that we lose sight of our true home.

Proverbs 12:25-13:6

Prov 12:25 “Wrong weighs a person down, an encouraging word cheers a person up.” Be an encourager!

Prov 13:1 don’t refuse to LISTEN to correction…it’s for my best!!
