Week 14

Deuteronomy 21:1-32:52

Deut 23:1-14 It’s funny because I was joking around while reading this like Lord speak to my heart (they are talking about crushed testicles here!!)…then He did! This just goes to show us what Jesus and grace have done for us! If there was anything wrong with you, you couldn’t approach the temple. For me it all boiled down to vs 14b: “He must not see any shameful thing in you, or he will turn away from you.” So thankful that He doesn’t do that now! He sees my shame and sin and loves me anyway. He invites me closer to Him in spite of all of the “blemishes”!!

Deut 29:19 “Those who hear the warnings of this curse should not congratulate themselves, thinking, ‘I am safe, even though I am following the desires of my own stubborn heart.’ This would lead to utter ruin!” Oh my, this was so me!! Thank You, Father, for mercy and forgiveness. For not making my life “utter ruin”, even though I was so comfortable and reveling in my sin.

Deut 31:6 “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

  1. Be strong!
  2. Be courageous!
  3. Do not be afraid!
  4. Do not panic!

  1. God will personally go before me!
  2. He WILL NOT fail me!
  3. He WILL NOT abandon me!

Deut 32:51 “For both of you betrayed me…So you will see the land from a distance, but you may not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.” Moses: proof that sin/rebellion can be forgiven but we may not escape consequences!

Luke 9:51-12:59

Lk 9:51 “As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” He knew, He knew, HE KNEW!!! He knew what was coming, what He would face, what He would endure for me and my sins! Yet, He RESOLUTELY went anyway. He went where He was called-KNOWING!!

Vs 55: “But Jesus turned and rebuked them.” James and John wanted to call fire down to destroy the city that refused to receive Jesus.

“He had not come to destroy man’s lives but to save them. This was the acceptable year of the Lord, and not the day of vengeance of our God. They should have been characterized by grace and not by vindictiveness.” -Believer’s Bible Commentary

Heart-hit, God! We should be, too! How many times have I approached someone with a vindictive heart/judgement when I should be displaying grace? Thank You, God for grace! For giving me Your grace when I so deserved judgement! Help me to extend Your grace to others…to never forget that there but for the grace of God, go I!!

Vs 57-62: I will follow You BUT….  I will follow You JUST THIS FIRST…. How many times do we say that? I will do this for You, Lord, but first…?? God wants obedience. He wants me to follow without all the buts and if/thens…He desires an obedient and submitted walk with Him regardless of surroundings and circumstances.

Lk 10:38-42 Mary & Martha. Martha complains to Jesus that she’s doing all the work and Mary is just sitting and listening to Him. Vs 41-42: “But the Lord said to her, ‘My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.'”  Don’t get caught up in the details, religion….and lose/ignore relationship with Jesus.

Lk 11:4b “..and don’t let us yield to temptation.” This makes much more sense to me than “lead us not into temptation”…God doesn’t cause temptation but He gives us the strength to resist it!

Vs 36: (Jesus speaking) “If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” Get rid of the dark corners (hidden sins) and make me a floodlight for You, Lord!

Vs 39-40: “Then the Lord said to him, ‘You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but you are filthy-full of greed and wickedness! Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside?'” Don’t get so caught up in the outer (appearance, how people see me, doing the “right” things) that I lose sight and fail to let God really have me on the inside! Always let God clean my heart and the outer will follow!

Lk 12:2-3 (Jesus speaking) “The time is coming when everything that is covered up will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!” Scary!! No more secrets, Lord!!

Vs 12: “for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.”

Vs 15b: “Life is not measured by what you own.”

Vs 21: “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

Vs 25: “Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”

Vs 28: “And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?”

Vs 33: “This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes.”

Vs 40: “You also must be ready all the time for the Son of Man will come when least expected.” No one knows when Jesus will return-live my life in a way pleasing to Him AT ALL TIMES! Anything I do, think, “If Jesus came back right now would He be pleased or would I be ashamed?”

Psalms 74:1-78:64

Proverbs 12:11-24

12:11b: “A PERSON WHO CHASES FANTASIES HAS NO SENSE!” Caps emphasis mine!!!
